History of Our School. Archbishop Holgate’s School was founded by one of the leading statesmen of the reign of King Henry VIII. Robert Holgate held absolute political power in the North, running the King’s Council in the North Parts from the King’s Manor, raising armies to subdue the Scots, and operating with the authority of the King himself.

InHenry VIII made him Archbishop of York. The school was founded as Archbishop Holgate's Grammar School in by Robert Holgate, the then Archbishop of York. The link between the school and successive Archbishops of York has been continuous throughout the school's history, and as recently asthe Archbishop of York held the post of Chair of Governors for the school.
